Protect Yourself, Wallet by Preparing Vehicle for Winter Weather
Temperatures are dropping, which means it's time to prepare your car for the winter months ahead. Motorists can save time and money by double-checking simple things such as tire pressure and condition, fluid levels and the battery. Damage to vehicles caused by missed maintenance can run from $150 to over $2,000, depending on the problem.
"Catching and fixing a problem in your car early on can save money and keep you off the side of the road," said Elaine Zeinner, AAA spokesperson. "Cold weather, snow and ice put a heavy demand on cars and create treacherous driving conditions. Stay safe by being prepared."
Vehicles should be inspected by a mechanic at least twice a year. Mechanics will check belts, hoses, battery, lights, brakes, tires, exhaust systems and fluid levels. Motorists can keep these simple tips in mind to avoid costly repairs and trouble-some delays while out on the road this holiday season:
- Check wipers, fill windshield wiper fluid and clean headlights and taillights to improve visibility at night and during inclement weather. Windshield fluid costs about $3 and takes only 10 minutes to fill.
- Inspect tire tread to avoid sliding and skidding.
- Check the pressure in your tires to prevent blow-outs. Filling up tires with air is free at some gas stations and doesn't take longer than 15 minutes.
- Fill fuel tank to avoid running out of gas and getting stuck on the side of the road in bad weather.
- Plan your route before you leave to avoid traffic or untreated roadways. Let someone know your intended route and what time you will arrive at your destination.
- Carry emergency supplies, such as AAA car care kit, boots, shovel, blanket, snacks and water. Always make sure your cell phone is charged in case you need roadside assistance.
